Adult Beverages for the Highly Sensitive Person

The Highly Sensitive Person and Alcohol

Adult beverages for the Highly Sensitive Person can be a tricky proposition.  According to Dr. Elaine Aron, author of ‘The Highly Sensitive Person’, HSPs are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol due to our innate and genetic trait of Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS).

So what does this mean for HSPs who enjoy consuming responsibly?

You’re probably already aware of your sensitivity to alcohol, but may not have known it was due to SPS.  And you probably have some coping mechanisms already:  monitoring your intake very closely, drinking water along with alcoholic beverages, avoiding drinking games, and in general not trying to match the consumption of others.

You may be considered a “lightweight” by your family and friends, and perhaps serve as the designated driver when out with a group.  Who doesn’t love a designated driver…..add that to the list of the advantages of our trait!

How can I benefit as an HSP?

Now we’re on to something productive!  For those who choose to consume adult beverages, and presuming your doctor approves, it would be wise for HSPs in particular to follow these Dietary Guidelines for Americans which I found on cdc.gov:

Up to one drink per day for women, and up to two drinks per day for men.  A “drink” is defined here as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor.  Those who choose red wine may also benefit from an increase in their good cholesterol level thanks to an ingredient called resveratrol.

So there you have it….a short and sweet answer for those HSPs wanting to honor their trait of high sensitivity!
